Prague is situated on a broken terrain on both banks
of the Vltava (Moldau) river in central Bohemia.
Hradcany
Hradcany, on the hill above the west bank, is where the dominant feature
of the city - the extensive complex of Prague Castle - stands. This
is the historical seat of Czech rulers.
Mala Strana
Mala Strana (Lesser Town) was originally a settlement around the castle,
and later grew into an imposing quarter of splendid Baroque palaces,
churches and gardens. Its center is Malostranske namesti (Lesser Town
Square).
Stare Mesto
The historical nucleus of the right-bank part of Prague is Stare Mesto
(Old Town). Its narrow and sinuous streets are still evoking the medieval
atmosphere. The Old Town streets lead to Staromestske Namesti (Old
Town Square) with many remarkable historical buildings, and the Astronomical
Clock of world fame.
Josefov
The neighboring quarter, Josefov, is an area of Jewish monuments of
European significance: the Old Jewish Cemetery and the Old-New Synagogue.
Nove Mesto
Nove Mesto (New Town) was built in the 14th century southwest of Stare
Mesto, with Vaclavske namesti (Vaclav Square) in its center.
